Happy Flag Day!

You may be thinking to yourself, what exactly is Flag Day?! Well, we looked around and came up with some history on this day that explains the 240+ year tradition and why we celebrate our star spangled banner!

The roots for Flag Day being back in June of 1776 when then President George Washington commissioned Philadelphia seamstress, Betsy Ross, to create the American Flag. The flag that was commissioned only had 13 stars & 13 stripes to represent the 13 states at the time. Then on June 14th, 1777, the Continental Congress, adopted the American Flag to promote national pride and unity.

It wasn’t until 1885 (nearly 108 years later) that schoolteacher, BJ Cigrand, arranged for the students in Fredonia, Wisconsin to celebrate ‘Flag Birthday’. Cigrand is now known as the ‘Father of Flag Day’. On May 30th, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing that National Flag Day be held on June 14th of every year. Today, Flag Day, is not considered a Federal holiday, but rather more of an observance to commemorate the flag’s birthday and is still observed all over the United States.
