Bid day is supposed to be the best day of the year. Let’s be honest though, it can be a little awkward and scary for the new members. Here are some tips to make bid day an experience the new members will never forget!
- Make icebreakers in small groups including all classes. This helps the new members make connections off the bat with multiple sisters, while also eliminating shyness.
- Put together meaningful bid day gifts! A great example is some of my sisters and I tied bows to cups and personalized them. The new members felt special and loved the gifts! Also, giving gifts in general is a great idea.
- The theme is super important! Making it unique not only makes the chapter stand out on campus, but the new members feel like they joined a clever chapter. This past fall, for example, my chapter’s theme was “party like it’s your bid day”. It was a new member’s birthday so it was extra special. Not only was this theme easy to decorate for, but it was unique and unheard of on my campus until we did it!
- Finally, GET TO KNOW ALL THE NEW MEMBERS! You may be an older member, but these ladies came to your house for a reason and it is their day so make them feel special! Say hi and get to know them!
I may have only provided four tips, but these tips are what helped my chapter have a successful end to recruitment and the ladies that came through our doors were very happy, and loved the theme and bid day in general. Yeah, it can be a bit awkward and scary, but all in all its joining the house you belong in that matters. Bid day helps seal the deal and is the first ever experience a new member faces, so it’s important to make the most of it.
